Global Fusion
My work explores culturally sacred objects and the effects of globalization on contemporary culture. In the same way stylistic differentiation is the defining movement in contemporary art due to the multitude of techniques and mediums available, I am delving into how our social identities can be shaped by the collective information available via the internet and globalization.
Global Fusion is a celebratory reaction to the massive culture-share currently occurring on a worldwide level. Originally I thought to dub this movement nouveau orientalism, but further investigation into the impact of the old European orientalism as a formula for Empire has lead me to abandon the term. Global Fusion is a creative movement inspired by a raised awareness of art, food, customs, and pop culture in the diverse world around us. I approach these themes in a melting pot fashion, drawing influence from many cultures simultaneously.
While I am not necessarily interested in political concepts, I find it hard to ignore the struggle of women around the world to gain the rights and freedom we enjoy (also a hard earned victory) here in America. A few of my pieces do reflect the images I came across during my internet research. Laying the information as I found it to allow the viewer to draw their own conclusions. I believe there is a lot art and imagery can do for this world wide women's right's moment, but ultimately real change can only come from within.
In my most recent sculptural endeavors I am exploring a variety of emotional states ranging from the imagination of childhood to the volatile reaction to recent tragic events. While applying a sense of reverence and ritual, my efforts reference a time of small gods, epic heroes, and narratives concealed in representational symbolism.
